Wales, April 2021 – In February of 2021 VISICS set out to implement the world’s record Digital Confined Space Monitoring (DCSM) project to-date, covering 183 manways, for the largest refinery in Wales.
The design
The project consisted of 24/7 monitoring of 183 spaces, for the duration
of 52 days.
During this turnaround, the VISICS system was monitoring rooms and 75 certified VISICS Operators were deployed.
The deployment was the first of its caliber on a global scale, and thus additional precautionary measures were taken to ensure connectivity and data reliability.

DELL Technologies, a VISICS technology partner, was consulted to help design the most reliable and redundant infrastructure solution possible, for DCSM (Digital Confined Space Monitoring).
The final infrastructure design consisted of redundancy applied at several levels within the system architecture: power, server resources and network backbone. Military grade fiber was also utilized to ensure speed and reliability of real-time data transfers. The fiber optic network was a ring configuration between two separate monitoring centers, at 500m distance from each other.
With this design, in case of a datacenter failure, the system will keep functioning as expected, without any manual human interaction, meaning chances of a stop of work scenario due to a technical interruption is virtually eliminated.
Exceptional outcomes
During this same deployment the client site experienced power failure. Under normal conditions this would have caused all confined space monitoring activities to go offline — leading to deploying traditional safety attendants to 183 confined spaces or a stop of work scenario.
Thanks to the redundant network design of VISICS 2.0 zero confined space monitoring activities were interrupted with the power failure. Work was able to proceed per usual without any disturbance or human intervention.
